Some say ToMAYto, Some say ToMAHto!

No matter how you spell it...tomato...I am sure you have your own way of pronouncing it that is reflective of you.

This morning I sat and did quite a bit of reflecting.  Not just on my pool as I've taken to doing.  But also, on my wildly overgrown tomato plant.

More specifically on "why?".

Why has my plant grown so well, but yielded very little fruit to enjoy?

I think the size is just wonderful.  I love how it has reached out on several sides instead of growing larger just straight up and down.  I've "looked" at this plant all summer and watched it closely, often musing on how it seems like it has arms wide open.  This plant knows my heart.

However, I can no longer ignore the fact that I have for the most part left this plant to fend for itself.  It's really needs "tending" to!  I have fruit that is there for the picking.   I have older ripened fruit that are still hanging on the vine and beginning to rot, not to mention the many that have already fallen off.   I even have new fruit that is freshly green and growing but desperately looking for sunshine and nutrition.  Additionally, I see many blooms that are hanging around as if deciding weather to bud here or not.

This plant is so much more though...
...it is really a metaphor of my blog!

I have been thinking quite a bit lately about blogging and the demands of life.  I have been experiencing a huge case of the "why bothers" when it comes to posting on my blog lately.  Does it really matter who says "tomayto" or who says "tomahto"?  Heck, I even enjoy hearing from a few "mayters" every now and then!

I am especially enjoying the posts of others and finding new inspirations to look at quite a bit.  I want more time to bring that inspiration to life.  I am taking a much needed break here.

It is a break time to enjoy the fruits of my labor.  A time to feed and tend to those precious things in my life that need it.  A time for being tired, a time for being inspired.  I'll be back when the "why bothers" leave.

Until then...

  2. Hi Mary,
Your backyard is gorgeous. I can't believe how large your tomato plant is, sometimes it just takes awhile to yield lots of tomatoes. I understand where you are coming from, and it's good to take time and reflect and tend to other things, too! Summers can get busy, so breaks are a good thing. In any case, enjoy your break and I will look forward to your new posts when you come back. I can't wait to see your fall goodies. ;) XOXO ~Liz

  6. Hello,
I visited your blog today - I saw you another bloggy friend's. You have such a charming blog. Your pool is gorgeous. When we moved, I had to leave my beautiful pool behind, and I miss it. While I was scrolling down, I noticed that you like mermaids too. I adore them, and even did a post about them at one time. Me and my daughters also have a blog, and we would love it if you could visit us and follow. I would enjoy coming back to visit with you. Your blog is fun, lovely, and very cheerful to me. I hope to hear from you, and have a sweet day.

  7. Just your friendly neighborhood mayter checking in to say that I totally relate to this post from metaphor to "why bother". As is usual when you share your heart, I follow your thoughts completely.

I have toyed with the idea of a regular blog break one week a month or something like that. Sometimes for me, blogging morphs from a desire and pleasure to a "need to blog" feeling. I generally melt down until it goes away.

I'll be here reading when your "why bothers" go away.

  8. I just went through a period of feeling just as you do. I had some surgery and didn't blog for 3 months and didn't really care or miss it during that time.
One thing for sure, I don't want to be tied to it and not be out there living life. So much to do and I want the freedom to do just that. I will blog once a week, less or more if I want or can. It frees you mentally as well.
Your pool area is gorgeous and I hope you enjoy the rest of the summer doing something fun. I will look forward to your return or to your visits.
Our tomatoes didn't do as well this year either. Maybe the extreme heat, who knows.
    Take care!

  10. Hi Mary, Your post touched me. Ever since I had the baby last year I just don't have the time to blog like I used to. And I'm constantly beating myself up for not commenting like I used to. Why do we do this to ourselves!!!
Glad you are taking a break to take time for yourself. WE all need to do that from time to time.
    xoxo,
    Kim
